Mamadou Diabate, a master balafon player and esteemed musician from Burkina Faso, offers a unique opportunity to delve into the captivating world of West African music through his enlightening lab workshops. These workshops are designed to provide participants with an immersive experience into the artistry of the balafon—a traditional African wooden xylophone—and the cultural legacy it embodies. Key Components of the Workshop: ​Balafon Techniques: Participants will be guided through the intricate techniques that define balafon playing. From striking to damping and rolling, these techniques form the foundation of the balafon's distinct sound. ​Rhythmic Patterns: The heart of West African music lies in its rhythmic complexity. Diabate's workshop will focus on teaching participants the mesmerizing rhythmic patterns that characterize this genre and how they can be skillfully executed on the balafon. ​Improvisation and Creativity: A hallmark of any music form, improvisation will take center stage.
