About the Event

Join us to our journey through the depth of  West African rhythms featuring Zal Sissokho.

Zal Sissokho creates new works with musicians from different backgrounds with his given traditional instrument, the KORA https://www.zalsissokho.ca/. The KORA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kora_(instrument)  is a 21-string African harp that blends wonderfully with contemporary Western music; this is why Buntalo, whose repertoire includes original compositions and Mandingo classics, modernizes the sounds while preserving the identity of these centuries-old compositions.

Zal continues to promote his music here and abroad. Brazil hosted him on tour in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. He had obtained a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts for the recording of his first album Silaba, released in February 2008.

The group Buntalo, was selected within the framework of the program Le Conseil des Arts de Montréal en tour, for a series between September 2007 and June 2008. Zal was also the winner of the OQAJ-Rideau prize during the official showcase at the Rideau Exchange in Quebec City in February 2008.
